I’ve always been interested in plants, going on nature walks with my family as a child. I work on plants, which seem so different to us but actually do a lot of the same things that we do; reproduce, burn energy, even breathe! Plus I think they’re even more interesting than animals because they can make their own food from carbon dioxide and water using energy from the sun!

Science is really great because it can help us understand the world. At school I really enjoyed the science experiments and the puzzles that you can solve (“If I change this, what will happen to that? Is that always the same?”). We can look at everything from microscopic germs to the whole planet and beyond, and find out how it is all interconnected in the universe. Awesome!

I never liked science, didn’t really get what it was all about. But having read all this stuff in the papers about fructose, and after what happened with my son, I’ve started to understand how science is in everything. It’s everywhere and it’s good to know what it’s all about. To take an interest.

I really enjoy that the work we do in science can take unexpected directions. When you start researching a topic, there is a lot of unknown. You can make plans, have strategies, but there may always be a result coming up that will throw unexpected challenges or opportunities at you.
It makes everyday different, and really enjoyable if you are curious about how things and beings work.

Well, my dad’s always off around the world doing something or other so I suppose I’ve always been aware of science and had to take an interest to keep up with what he’s been doing. It means he’s never here, but it is pretty cool what he does, like with the rice in India. If we don’t preserve all the variations of rice we might lose important genetic characteristics.

For me science means sport – how the body works, how to get fit, what food and drink to eat to train better. When you really look at it all of that is your biology, it’s all scientific.
